This series is all about honouring our local independents who endeavour to bring you beautiful products and unique services or experiences. When I ran my beautiful children’s boutique in Worcester, my routine involved turning the door sign to OPEN as soon as I walked through the door, putting my bags, coffee etc down, then standing outside in all weather to assess the window display in the sunshine, pouring rain or freezing winds. Was the light doing justice to the colour story or prints in the window?  Were people looking in? Turning their heads when walking by?  Making comments?  I often heard people reacting to the shop and it gave me a warm glow inside. That is what it was all about. Perhaps it can be considered people pleasing, and I am humble enough to agree.

Window Display by Michelle Cuadra , Creatie Director of Hereford City Centric
My beautifully planned and coordinated windows. They were never the same from week to week.

Some nights, I tossed and turned over an impromptu inspiration. That window was crucial advertising for the shop, made people smile, and of course improved the street it was on, pulling in new businesses. Even rowdy teenage boys would pause a moment and take in all the whimsical glory. My message was coming across gracefully, yet loud and clear. The visual effort was of utmost importance on many levels.

I often wonder what certain businesses are thinking.  The lighting is all wrong, the floor plan is confusing, you cannot locate prices, old merchandise and shelves are covered in dust, the air smells mouldy and rancid, the windows are greasy, the merchandise is a complete mess, the staff aren’t interested and make you feel like you are disturbing them…and on and on.

Vintage Kit Children’s Clothing Alice in Wonderland themed window. One of my favourite English children’s brands. Keep it interesting.

I often browse the shops for inspiration and take note of future purchases in my head….that is until I get the cold shoulder for not actually making them a sale. So wrong! All of it!!!  There is no room for any of the aforementioned shops in this blog, unless under extraordinary circumstances. No, never mind, there is no room at all.

Hereford City Centric aims to celebrate the local city centre businesses who take the time to dress their windows, and take pride in their displays through out the interior. This can include a street or market stall, a pop up space, a food truck, pubs, cafes, restaurants, studios, beauty salons..all of it!!!  We are here to showcase Hereford independents and expose the public to a different perspective, as well as help them on their shopping journey.
