Since opening Skinzophrenic Peter Masters has paved the way for various artists who have come and gone, opened their own shops and some who still remain. That is how the tattoo industry works, and Peter feels great pride in the opportunities he has created. He opened Skinzophrenic three years ago and it quickly built a buzz that surpassed his expectations. Although, we all know Peter is an ambitious character and fearless at working towards his goals, there are times when things may not go as planned. Luckily this has not been the case for Peter. This being said, Skinzophrenic is moving to a bigger and better location on Aubrey Street this month which is only around the corner from his current shop, up the road from Hereford’s latest hot spot the Firefly Smokehouse (King St), and a few steps from Hereford Indie Food Festival pioneers, A Rule of Tum.

It was certainly a wise decision to remain in the ever expanding West Street Quarter which is undergoing a prosperous regeneration making it one of Hereford city centre’s trending destinations, especially with the resounding success of last weeks Indie Food Festival.

The Space

There will be a Grand Opening Party on September 10th in the new studio that will accommodate up to 7 artists. Peter has poured his efforts and hard earned finances into creating the space of his dreams. The new studio, once a gym, consists of two floors and the interior is inspired by the Victorian Steampunk style. I have been indoors for a preview, although in the process of renovation, and the studio was stunning even before complete!

There are breathtaking ceiling murals of the Venus de Milo and other classical paintings, beautiful Victorian fittings and the light spilling in illuminates the top floor with a resplendence reminiscent of a more decadent time.

Contrasting the religious idols that were the subject of the masters on the ceiling, is Simon Rogers mural depicting a darker theme that spans the right wall upon entry.  Peter has made great use of this creative space which will become a part of his legacy.

The new Skinzophrenic will also use the latest tattoo technology, give customers more privacy and of course maintain the usual high standard of customer service. Peter has created a unique space unlike any other in the city that will no doubt attract new patrons and add to the successful regeneration of the area that is still in early stages.

It’s a good thing he hasn’t moved too far from John and Amelie who run The Hereford Beer House on West Street (a popular spot for craft beer lovers) since he has built a solid friendship with them, lunches there regularly and most importantly, says they have been an inspiration in his branching out.

Good luck Skinzophrenic team, Hereford City Centric wish you all much success.
