WILD SOUNDS FROM THE GARAGE! A BRIEF HISTORY OF PSYCHEDELIA

“The term ‘garage band’ literally means the space where many bands rehearsed. LSD and marijuana played a big part in the music with widespread use among America’s youth across its colleges and cities. This led to some of the wildest and most demented records ever put to vinyl as sounds became….”

Fuzz, Acid and Flowers

MY FIRST ENCOUNTER

Psychedelia is back!…in fact it’s never really gone away as each new generation turns on and freaks out to a new revamped version of those groovy 60’s sounds. It all started for me after taping an hour long Psychedelic radio show special in the late 80’s (possibly on Radio 1) which I still have featuring wonderful psych gems from The Seeds (Satisfy You), The Chocolate Watchband (No Way Out), Nobody’s Children (Good Times), The Bees (Voices Green And Purple) and the fuzzed up brilliance of The Third Bardo’s ‘Five Years Ahead Of My Time’.

There was also a strange track by Dave Diamond & The Higher Elevation called Diamond Mine with a weird voice over and sinister lyrics and howls (the six foot narcissus and peanut butter fudge angel of love) and a cool, hypnotic song called ‘Cellophane Wrapped Woman’ which will always remain a mystery. I’ve never heard it since and have no idea who its by. Anyway, my mind was suitably expanded and I rushed out to get the Best Of The Pebbles on yellow marble vinyl, a great place to start.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Well what an amazing night that was! Although PiL have been one of my favourite bands for decades now – since I first saw them on TOTP around 12 years old- I didn’t know much about their past at the time, but even at that age I can remember sitting on the floor of my parents home watching  the general 80’s bollocks on the telly whilst everyone was chatting away among themselves when suddenly, on comes good old Johnny. Sounds From The Sofa: Mass Intrusions, Donald Trump, Jeremy Corbyn, Fidel Castro, Curry Houses & More With Young Feminist Punks – The Delinquents

The term “Feminist Punks” might possibly seem like a contradiction to those unaware of what PUNK actually is all about. The average lost soul often generalises punk as debauchery without a cause…please say it isn’t so! With this movement in its 40th year, it is finally receiving the respect it deserves.

The term “Feminist Punks” might possibly seem like a contradiction to those unaware of what PUNK actually is all about. The average lost soul often generalises punk as debauchery without a cause. Please say it isn’t so! With this movement in its 40th year, it is finally receiving the respect it deserves.

Granted at the time of Punk’s origins, the world was in quite a state, and the only way to make a point and break up an establishment that had us saying “yes sir and no sir” and living life under their candy coated values, was to stand up for yourself and fight back. Not so simple.

If you think about it, you really had to be an intelligent, brave individual to stand up to authority, and even more so to stand up for women in a society that is very condescending to them for shits and giggles and to stroke the male ego. Things have progressed somewhat in that respect, but society is in chaos again and The Delinquents are just not having it.

This year England is celebrating the origins of punk after 40 years of it still going strong, and this year it is going even stronger, the buzz is in the air and it has almost made punk a bit trendy…but these things happen and the originators of this music culture should be honoured.

They have inspired thousands of bands all over the world to also share their message and add their own influences to punk culture. I am not saying that bands inspired by other bands from the past aren’t creating original music, but their inspiration and influences have to come from somewhere right?

‘Sounds From the Sofa’ The ‘Terminal Rage’ Interview…Advice For Young Musicians, Punk Idols & The Fight Against Austerity

Imagine if you will, three amazing characters who have come together to form the punk band known as Terminal Rage sitting before you under the effulgence of The Booth Hall stage lights.  I was aware these gents were characters, but as the interview progressed my “impressed” button was pushed many a time.
